About the event
The Espen Eriksen Trio are well known to Aberdeen jazz fans from two standout performances on their previous visits to The Blue Lamp and they make a welcome return with British saxophone star Andy Sheppard. They first teamed up for two concerts in London in 2016. It was clear from the first note that this was a perfect match. To quote the jazz website All About Jazz, “the symbiosis between the saxophonist and the trio is truly remarkable”. The quartet is now touring with live record, In The Mountains, which was selected Editor’s Choice by Jazzwise describing it as “an album of classy, inventive jazz improvisation that's pretty near perfect.” After 15 years, six albums and regular touring on four continents, Espen Eriksen Trio is firmly established on the international jazz scene. The trio’s music relies on highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and a “less is more” approach and is often credited for its unique voice within today’s jazz scene by the international press. Their first record together with Andy Sheppard, Perfectly Unhappy was released in 2018. The British saxophone star – known from his work with Gil Evans, Carla Bley and George Russell among others – says he knew from the first time he heard the trio that he would fit right in. His playing highlights Eriksen's beautiful melodies and adds a unique voice to the solo parts. The quartet has sold out venues throughout Europe, including two concerts at the London Jazz Festival which were broadcast on BBC Radio. Sheppard is also featured on 3 tracks on the new live album, In The Mountains released April 2022. The album received great reviews and drew comparisons with Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek's legendary "Belonging" quartet
